Join this exciting community whose collective efforts are bringing innovation and inspiration to Edina City of Grand Bassa County, Liberia. These initiatives are all made possible through the collaborative efforts of caring friends of the diaspora abroad and the citizens of Edina.
The concept for this initiative is the brainchild of philanthropists, Dr. Frank and Mrs. Agnes Liberty Carver, who after years of repeated travel to Liberia, fell in love with the people and locale of Edina City. Their desire is to bring awareness to the beauty and potential of Edina City as a place for growth and relocation opportunities. The beauty and historical significance of this city also attracted others with the same mindset. To date this collaboration has generated the installation of solar street lights throughout the city of Edina and the township of Kingsville in District one of Grand Bassa County.
The historical significance of Edina City began in 1832 when it was officially settled by previously enslaved African Americans. At the confluence of three major bodies of water, including the Atlantic, the settlement thrived as a central port in domestic and international trade, making it a contender for Liberia’s capital city in the nineteenth century. The town’s past is reflected in the remnants of the settler architecture that occupy the gridded landscape, such as the estate and business office of Joseph James Cheeseman, Liberia’s 12th president. Cheeseman’s property sits along the bank of the St. John’s river, which allowed for the exchange of local products for imported Western goods at the doorstep of his commercial office. It is this president after which the J. J. Cheeseman Elementary school is named.
